Frank Hits The Tropical Disco In NYC, 2020
Partners: Sara Kobayashi & Tania Zaidi

Design Process

Frankenstein (top): Frank is an outgoing bachelor in the city who loves to unwind on weekends and get lost in the music at the discotheque.

Pink Platypus (center): This is the world’s first Pink Platypus Rocket that can fly up to the earth’s atmosphere to suck in SMOG to help slow global warming. It’s pink so that it stands out in the blue sky, and it also plays tropical music as it shoots up so that it doesn’t stress itself out.

Mrs. Croc (bottom): Say what’s up to Mrs Croc. She loves dressing up in crazy hats and dresses to blend in with humans when she walks around Manhattan.

New narrative: Frank is exhausted. He works full-time in the Earth's atmosphere sucking the smog in the air to help slow down the impact of global warming. When he's not in the sky, he's making the most of his Manhattan apartment. On weekends, he loves to dress up and hit the town! In this scene, we find Frank at a Tropical Disco party, dressed with a green lei and grass skirt.

The design process for this assignment was really fun and playful. It was exciting to see how the individual stories translated nicely to the remixed narrative. In regards to the code, I heavily employed user-defined functions for each segment of the composition (ie. head, torso, legs). I attempted parameters with the green lei on the neck of the torso and continued to explore modular ways of usinguser-defined functions with the rest of the lei and the discoball.

Reflection

It was really fun to translate imagery from one source to p5.js. I found myself refining and adjusting all three source images to fit the final composition. During the process, I felt a bit constrained with the primitive shapes in making the pink arms and the arc shape of the lei. I also wish I spent more time and did laterally moving disco light dots instead of flickering ones. I'm curious to figure out better practices and ways to make my code leaner.
